2025–26 Tax Return Checklist: What You Need Before You Lodge

A practical checklist of documents and records you need to get your individual tax return done quickly and accurately this tax season in Epping and northern Melbourne.

2 July 2026 · AMG Tax Services

Tax season is open, and the fastest way to get a bigger refund sooner is to walk in (or log on) with everything ready. Here’s what our clients across Epping, South Morang, Mill Park, Lalor and the rest of northern Melbourne need to bring for their individual tax return.

The essentials

  • Income statements — your employer’s income statement (formerly Group Certificate/PAYG summary), usually available through myGov once finalised.
  • Bank interest — annual interest statements from your bank or credit union.
  • Private health insurance statement — needed to complete the Medicare levy surcharge section correctly.
  • Government payment summaries — Centrelink, JobSeeker, Youth Allowance, or Paid Parental Leave statements if applicable.

Deductions people forget

  • Work-related car, travel, and uniform expenses (with a logbook or diary if claiming the cents-per-kilometre or logbook method).
  • Home office running costs if you work from home — internet, phone, electricity, and depreciation on equipment.
  • Self-education expenses directly connected to your current role.
  • Income protection insurance premiums (if paid outside your super fund).
  • Donations of $2 or more to registered charities.

If you’re a sole trader, Uber driver, or have a side hustle

You’ll also need a summary of income and expenses for the business, any BAS lodged during the year, and details of any asset purchases over $300 for depreciation purposes. If you drive for Uber, DoorDash, or another gig platform, keep your trip logs and expense receipts — these are commonly reviewed by the ATO and good records make the difference between a clean return and a headache later.

Investment property or shares?

If you own an investment property, bring your annual statement from your property manager, loan interest statements, and any receipts for repairs, maintenance, insurance, and council rates. Share and crypto investors should have a full transaction history — we can help reconstruct this if you’ve traded across multiple exchanges or wallets during the year.

Book early

Tax season gets busy fast, especially in the first few weeks of July. Book your appointment online or give us a call — we offer both in-person appointments at our Epping office and remote lodgement for clients across the northern suburbs.
